Aircon Relocations

Moving a split air-conditioner is not just a lift and carry job. We disconnect, recover refrigerant, re-run pipework if needed and recommission the unit so it works properly after a renovation, office move, or room change.

When an aircon relocation makes sense

An existing split system can often be moved to a better position instead of buying a new unit. That is useful during home renovations, tenant changes, office reconfigurations, and when a bedroom or meeting room gets split into a different layout. In Johannesburg and Gauteng, we also get calls when a wall was removed, ceilings were lowered, or the outdoor unit is sitting in a spot with poor airflow and too much dust.

A proper relocation keeps the equipment usable, keeps the piping neat, and helps avoid problems later. If the indoor unit is moved too far from the outdoor unit, the refrigerant line set may need to be extended or replaced. If the old site had vibration, poor drainage, or a weak bracket, we correct that during the move. It is a practical way to get more life out of a system thats still sound.

  • Home renovations and room changes
  • Office moves and tenant fit-outs
  • Replacing a noisy or awkward installation position
  • Moving units for better cooling or improved access for service

What is included in the relocation service

Our relocation service covers safe removal, transport within the job site or to another address, and reinstallation at the new position. We isolate the power, recover refrigerant correctly, remove the indoor and outdoor units, and inspect the pipework, insulation, wiring, drainage and mounting points before anything goes back up.

If the existing copper pipes are long enough and still in good condition, they can sometimes be reused. If they are kinked, oil-stained, corroded or too short, we replace them with the correct diameter line set. For most split systems that is 1/4 inch liquid line and 3/8 inch suction line on smaller units, or 1/4 inch and 1/2 inch on larger capacity units. We also check the drain fall so condensate runs away properly and does not drip onto ceilings or floors.

  • Recovery of refrigerant and controlled disconnection
  • Removal and refitting of indoor and outdoor units
  • Pipework, insulation and drain inspection
  • Wall bracket, base frame or stand check
  • Vacuum test and recommissioning after installation

Our relocation process step by step

We start with a site check to confirm the unit size, the access route, the new position, and whether the system can be moved without major changes. On site, our installation supervisor checks the line lengths, power supply, wall strength and drainage. If the move is across a property, through a service passage, or between floors, we plan the lift and protect the fittings and floors as we work.

After disconnection, the unit is moved and mounted at the new point. We make the refrigerant connections, pressure check the joints, pull a deep vacuum, and recommission the system. Then we test cooling, fan speeds, thermostat response and drainage. For inverter systems, we also verify board communication and make sure the unit is not showing fault codes after start-up.

  • 1. Site assessment and quotation
  • 2. Safe shutdown, recovery and removal
  • 3. New mounting, pipework and electrical reconnection
  • 4. Vacuum, pressure test and performance check
  • 5. Handover with operating guidance

Turnaround times and planning around your move

Most standard relocations can be completed in a single day once the site is ready and the new mounting point is prepared. Larger systems, difficult access, or extra copper work may take longer. If you are moving offices in Sandton, Randburg, Midrand or the East Rand, we can often plan the relocation outside peak trading hours to reduce downtime.

Turnaround depends on whether the unit is being moved a short distance within the same property, or to a different address. It also depends on the condition of the old installation. If the bracket is rusted, the insulation is damaged, or the drain needs a new route, we allow extra time so the job is done properly and not rushed. That way the unit starts up cleanly and you are not calling for a repair a week later.

How pricing is worked out

We price aircon relocations by unit size, pipe length, access, and whether parts need replacing. A small 9 000 BTU or 12 000 BTU split system in a straightforward home move will cost less than a larger inverter unit in a first-floor office with long copper runs and a new outdoor mounting position. If the relocation needs a new bracket, drain extension, trunking, isolator or power point changes, those are quoted clearly before work starts.

We do not charge as if every move is the same because it is not. A relocation in Bryanston with easy access is a different job to a move in a retail unit in Midrand with limited ceiling space and a stricter after-hours window. You will get a practical estimate based on the actual site and the amount of labour and materials involved, no guesswork.

  • Unit size and type
  • Distance between old and new positions
  • Condition of existing pipework and cabling
  • Access, parking and height work
  • Extra materials or compliance items

Maintenance after the move

After a relocation, the first service check should be done within 3 to 6 months, especially if the unit works hard during summer or sits in a dusty area. In Gauteng, most split systems do well with servicing every 6 months in offices and every 12 months in homes, but units near kitchens, main roads or workshops may need earlier attention. Coastal humidity is not the main issue here, but dust and power interruptions can still affect performance and starting components.

During the first few weeks after the move, keep an eye on dripping, unusual noise, reduced airflow, or a unit that cycles too often. If the relocation changed the line length or routing, we will make sure the system is pulling down correctly and that the drain is clearing. Small issues caught early are cheaper to fix than a compressor or board failure later.

Why clients call us for relocations

We have been handling air-conditioning work in Johannesburg North and across Gauteng since 2004, so we know how to move systems through real homes, small offices, shops and mixed-use properties. The team is used to supply-and-fit work, servicing, repairs and replacement jobs, which helps when a relocation turns out to need a bracket change, a pipe repair, or a cleaner power connection.

Thabo Mokoena oversees the business, with Naledi Khumalo handling sales, Pieter van Rensburg on installation supervision, Ayesha Patel coordinating service bookings, Sibusiso Dlamini on technical support, and Lerato Molefe handling heat pump work when the relocation is part of a bigger upgrade. If you need an existing split system moved in Sandton, Randburg, Midrand, the East Rand or West Rand, we can assess it and tell you plainly whether it is worth relocating or better replaced.

What clients say

Questions we get asked

Can every split air-conditioner be relocated?

Most can be moved if the unit is in good condition and the new position is suitable. Very old, corroded or leaking systems may not be worth relocating, especially if the pipework is tired.

Will I need new copper pipes and insulation?

Not always. If the existing line set is the right length, not kinked and still clean, it may be reused. If it is too short or damaged, we replace it with the correct size and insulation.

Do you relocate aircons during office hours?

Yes, but where possible we plan around your business. Many office moves are done after hours or over a weekend so staff and customers are not disrupted.
